Een bruggetje naar toeristisch Japan…
Na anderhalve week vooral van de natuur en de rust van het platteland te hebben genoten, komen we nu in de buurt van een paar toeristische plekjes die we niet willen overslaan. We beginnen met Iwakuni, waarvan we inmiddels weten dat er een grote Amerikaanse legerbasis is. Maar daar komen we natuurlijk niet voor. Iwakuni is bekend om zijn prachtige houten boogbrug Kintaikyo over de Nishiki-rivier. Ook is er een schattig klein kasteeltje op een heuvel en een mooi park waar lekkere ijsjes te krijgen zijn.
We zijn ‘s ochtends meteen na ons visontbijt vertrokken uit Shimonoseki maar wilden onderweg naar Iwakuni nog een beetje natuur meepakken, dus we kozen de omweg van een paar uur door de bergen in plaats van de saaie snelweg langs de zee. Prachtige boerderijen zagen we op die route! Daar dromen wij wel een beetje van!
In het middagzonnetje lag Kintaikyo op ons te wachten in de glinsterende rivier. De brug bestaat uit drie grote en twee kleine bogen en werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1673. Sinds 1673 heeft er op deze plek altijd een houten boogbrug gestaan. Door natuurgeweld is de brug twee keer gesneuveld en vervolgens met de hand herbouwd, in 1674 en na 276 jaar opnieuw in 1950. In de periode 2002-2004 werd de brug in gedeeltes opnieuw opgebouwd, waarbij steeds delen werden vervangen terwijl het publiek de bouwwerkzaamheden van dichtbij kon volgen.
Het huidige brug is inmiddels twintig jaar oud en werd herbouwd volgens exact dezelfde bouwplannen als die van het eerste exemplaar in 1673. De bewoners van Iwakuni zijn erg zuinig op hun brug, dus mag je er alleen lopend overheen. Je moet er bovendien een kaartje voor kopen, van de opbrengsten wordt het onderhoud bekostigd. Een goeie deal, vinden wij.
In de bocht van de rivier is er vlak bij de brug een grote parkeerplaats aangelegd op de kiezels van de rivierbedding. Daar kon onze bus mooi een middagje staan terwijl wij de toerist uithangen en een ijsje eten in het park. Daarna met de cable car naar boven voor het mooie uitzicht en een rondje om het kasteel, en hup weer naar beneden. Op zoek naar een plekje voor de nacht, ergens tussen Iwakuni en de no. 1 attractie van Japan, het eiland Miyajima onder de rook van Hiroshima.
