In Japan wordt anders naar sushi gekeken dan wij denken. De meeste Japanners vinden het lekker, maar ook een beetje ouderwets. Wat vooral onder jongeren heel populair is, is de goedkope kaiten sushi. Kaiten betekent lopende band, het eten komt op schaaltjes in optocht voorbij langs je tafeltje. Wij houden ervan, het is vaak bizar goedkoop en de kwaliteit is redelijk. In Aomori kwamen we de eerste tegen, Kappa Sushi. Het zijn ketens met honderden vestigingen door heel Japan. Naast Kappa zijn er Sushiro, Hamazushi en nog een paar. Ze lijken sterk op elkaar. Kappa is een Japanse watergeest, niet zo lief als op de foto. Hij lokt mensen het water in zodat ze verdrinken.
Maar goed, goedkope sushi dus. Verschillende soorten tonijn, inktvis en schelpdieren om te proberen, bijzonder leuk en al gauw staat er een flinke stapel lege bordjes. Water en groene thee zijn gratis, frisdrank is goedkoop en bier is duur, dus dat laatste slaan we mooi over.
